Luella Kartes

Luella Donelda Short Kartes took her first breath in Heaven on May 16, 2010, just three months short of her 88th birthday.

Luella was born to Bill and Pearl (Erickson) Short on August 15, 1922 in Maida, ND.  She grew up and was educated in the Elkwood area.  Luella was united in marriage to Clement Francis Kartes on July 12, 1940 and nine children were born to them: Curtis, Bob, a baby girl, Larry, Patsy, Rick, a baby boy, Roger and Douglas.  They lived in Langdon until 1965 and then moved to Seattle where they were both employed at Boeing Aircraft.  Luella retired from Boeing in 1988, and she suffered a stroke in 1990.  They returned to Langdon in 1991 where Luella became a resident of Maple Manor Care Center.  Clem passed away in 1994, and Luella moved to Fergus Falls where she lived at the Minnesota Veteran’s Home.  Luella loved her kids and grandkids and was known to say that she loved them each the same.  We called her Mother, Mum and Mom – but our first choice was “Friend.”

Luella is survived by her children:  Bob (Verna) Kartes of Richland, WA; Larry (Norma) Kartes of Des Moines, WA; Pat (Jeff) Melkert of Fergus Falls, MN; Rick Kartes of Boise, ID; Douglas Kartes of Seattle, WA, grandchildren: Bonnie Kartes, Steve Kartes, Vince Kartes, Troy Puetz, Paul Kartes, Terry Puetz, John Kartes, Jodi Heino, Douglas Kartes, Jacob Kartes, great-grandchildren: Alicia Kartes, Maleré Kartes, Ryan Kartes, Taj Puetz, Raehs Puetz, Tobias Puetz, Madison Puetz, Gunner Puetz, Savannah Puetz, Josh Heino, Callie Heino, Amee Heino, sisters-in-law; Arlaine Delebo, Marlys Patterson, Bernadina Mikkelsen, Florentine Gapp, brother Dennis Patterson, brother-in-law Lowell (Marilyn) Kartes.

She was preceded in death by her father Bill Short and mother Pearl Short-Patterson, her husband Clem, son Roger, son Curtis, a baby boy and a baby girl, siblings: Harold Short, Dorothy Noerstrem, Ruby Dame, Russell Short, Russell Patterson, Bob Short, and great-grandchildren Ashlee Marie Puetz and Kaed Lynn Puetz.

VISITATION will begin at 6:00 pm Tuesday May 18, 2010, with a 7:00 pm prayer service at the Brooks Funeral Home of Langdon, ND.

SERVICES will be on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Langdon, ND. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery of Langdon, ND. Lunch and fellowship will follow the burial at the American Legion Hall.

Condolences:

It will be the little things you remember, the quiet moments, the smiles, the laughter.

And although it may seem hard right now, it will be the memories of these little things that help push away the pain and bring the smiles back again. Our thoughts are with you during this very hard time. Love Greg & DeAnn Melkert

Patsy,
