Velva Adrian was born January 25, 1934 at Munich, ND to Henry and Mabel (Quiring) Adrian.  She grew up in the area and graduated from Munich High School.  Velva moved to Kansas where she attended a Mennonite Nurses College.  When her father became ill she returned home and finished her education at Valley City State and was able to complete her clinical work in Devils Lake.  She earned her BS in Nursing and achieved a perfect score on her nursing boards.  While working on her clinical work, Velva needed her guitar tuned and was introduced to a young man named George.  Velva was united in marriage to George Schmiess on October 13, 1957 at Valley City, ND.  They made their home near Alsen and began their family.  They retired from farming and moved permanently to Langdon in 1990.  Velva adored her grandchildren.  She loved to crochet and enjoyed anything crafty.  She was talented with silk flowers and was able to do the flowers for many family members' weddings.  She was dedicated to getting flowers out to the cemetery plots of loved ones.  She enjoyed cooking, was active in quilting and had a kind soul and a great sense of humor.

Velva is survived by her husband George of Langdon, ND,  children: Vicki Anderson of Grand Forks, ND; Sheldon (Tammie) Schmiess of Sabin, MN; Tim (Susan) Schmiess of Harvey, ND; Jodi (John) Gunnerson of Houston, TX, 11 grandchildren: Aaron Johnson, Christopher Johnson, Travis Anderson, Ashley Anderson, Katie Schmiess, Dustin Schmiess, Zachary Schmiess, Emily Schmiess, Jacob Schmiess, Rachel Schmiess, Joshua Schmiess,  great-grandson Hayden Johnson, siblings: Lois Howatt of Cooperstown, ND; Gordon (Jan) Adrian of North Carolina; James Adrian of Fargo, ND; Ruth (Gerald) Schill of Fargo, ND, sister-in-law Jennie Schmiess of Grand Forks and many nieces and nephews.

George you and Velva were so great to come to play cards with many of the residents here and they so waited for your time together.  You both truly enlightened their day and we will all miss Velva but will remember her many acts of kindness.

God Bless each and every one of you.

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Velva.  I have many fond memories of Velva when I was growing up.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.  Jerry Ratzlaff & family

Velva and George were very nice in visiting my dad Art and stepmother Marvel Klein when they entered Maple Manor in April. I only knew Velva since April but wish I would have known her longer. With sympathy, Charlie Klein

Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss.  The lost of a love one is the most painful experience we have in life.  It would be great if death didn't exist, if life never ended in a world that was beautiful and peaceful and everyone loved one another.  This can be a reality for us if we learn to love Jehovah and Jesus Christ.  They promise we will see our loved ones again, happy and healthy.      Marquell
