Irene E. Lawrence

Irene Ethel Eckerdt Lawrence, 96, passed away July 29, 2011 at Maple Manor Care Center of Langdon, ND where she had resided for the last three years.

Irene Eckerdt was born on the family farm north of Rock Lake, ND on Christmas Day in 1914 to Minnie Bucholz and John Robert Eckerdt.  She had one brother, John Robert Eckerdt.

Irene graduated from Hansboro in 1934.  She then helped on the farm for two years before marrying George Emmett Lawrence on December 30th, 1936 in Cando.  Their first year of married life was spent at Devils Lake before moving to Bottineau for seven years.  Both of their children were born there, Gayle in 1939 and John in 1943. In 1944 they moved to Langdon and started the Ace Hardware Plumbing and Heating store which they ran until closing it in 1965. They then moved to Chinle, AZ where George had taken a job and then returned to Langdon in 1972.  In 1984 they moved to Fargo and wintered in Mesa, AZ.  After George’s death in 1991, Irene returned to Langdon.

Irene loved to cook, sew, crochet and read.  She also enjoyed the outdoors where she tended her flower gardens and cared for the birds. She was a lifelong active member of the United Methodist Church in Langdon where she served on many committees and ladies groups. She prided herself with the numerous crafts and talents she provided for their bazaar. Her divinity was renown.  She loved fine things, tea parties, card clubs and the color pink.  Her motto was “What Is, Is”!!!

Irene is survived by her daughter Gayle Hart of Wales, ND and son John (Joann) Lawrence of Fargo. She has one living nephew, Robert (Fern) Eckerdt of Rolette. She has five grand children: Kathi Hart Theade (Cobey) of Red Lodge, MT, Lori Hart of Farmington, MN, David Hart (Jane) of Langdon, Jack Lawrence (Carrie) of West Fargo, and Jana Lawrence Olson(Matt) of Valley City.  She has ten great-grandchildren: Taylor, McKenzie and Madison Hart of Langdon, Clancy and Carter Theade of Red Lodge, Jayci and Carsten Lawrence of West Fargo, and Ella, Emmett and Emery Olson of Valley City.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband George, parents, brother John, sister-in-law Doris Eckerdt , nephew Jack Eckerdt and son-in-law Lyle Hart.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 on Monday, August 1, 2011 at the United Methodist Church of Langdon with Rev. Tim Vorlage officiating. Visitation will take place one hour before the time of service on Monday.

Interment will be at IOOF Cemetery of Rock Lake.

To Irene's family,

My dad, Les Fischer worked for George and Irene for all the years I remember growing up. They were very generous, loving people. Every time I would run into Irene in Langdon, she would ask how the family was.  She was a great lady.

Dear family,

I am the daughter of Alvin Bucholz of Rocklake,ND.  He was a first cousin of Irene.  I had Bob as a music teacher in school and his band played at our wedding 46 years ago. I was fortunate to meet Irene and George when my Aunt, Ruth Bucholz, and I used to make trips to Fargo and visit them.  I always admired her for her positive outlook on life.

We may walk a desert pathway, but the end of the journey is the GARDEN OF GOD and your Mother is now there.

You should all be happy that you shared and cared in a good life. Death is a part of Life. No one escapes its clutches, and no one long escape the harsh reality of dealing with the loss of someone dear. Irene is now in  another place in another time, Her life no longer a part of yours or mine. Her memory and the love you all have shared will be with you always. You and your family have my deepest sympathy.

Dear family,

Having left home so many years ago, I only knew your mom as "Mrs. Lawrence" mother of Gayle and Johnny. She was one of the busy ladies in the old Methodist church who was always there to help functions move along.

Your mother is now covered with the beautiful garments of nature: the bright green grass of summer, the colorful leaves of autumn, the spotless white of winter, and the lovely flowers of spring.  May she rest in peace.

Our hearts and prayers are with you her blessed family. Irene was one of those gracious, stately ladies who would change any room she entered with her presence. Grand woman, she will be missed by all.  Donald and Elaine Haugen

Dear John & Joann,

We would like to express sympathy from the Osmon girls for your Mother's passing. At my Dad's memorial we made sure to go visit your Mother at Maple Manor. When I was young, I personally have memories of my Dad taking me on errands to the hardware store, and my Mom and I visiting in your Mother's house when she moved back to Langdon. Your Mother always had an infectious smile and laughter. Looking back it is the history of those wonderful parents in Langdon that gives us our legacy. Wishing you and your family peace.

Sincerely, Barbara Jean (Osmon) Manos

A very nice lady and neighbor.  Maybe once again Irene and Mom can share their reading material.
