Carlton Flaten

Carlton Flaten, 78, of Langdon, ND, passed away on Friday, December 16, 2011, at the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital of Langdon.

Carlton was born November 18, 1933 at Crystal, ND to Guy and Thilda (Haug) Flaten. The family moved to Hay Township in 1938. He met the love of his life and married Esther Fulsaas of Walhalla in 1954. They lived in South Olga Township for most of their lives, first buying the Albert Midgaarden farm and then in 1966, the Pete Moe farm. He was always a farmer, but in the early years he worked at American Crystal Sugar at one time, and during the missile era, for the Army Corps of Engineers. Carlton and Esther loved sports – spending winters curling, summers watching the kids play baseball and later, taking up golfing. He enjoyed many hunting trips with family and friends, probably more for the visiting than the hunting. They moved to Langdon in 1994, and he lost Esther in 2000. He was an avid photographer- capturing the people, things and events that were important in his life. He got a great deal of enjoyment in sharing those photos with others. He was a lifelong member of the Aspelund Free Lutheran Church in Vang until it closed and then joined the Emmanuel Evangelical Church in Langdon. He will be missed.

Carlton is survived by his children: Vicky (Michael) Steen and Dennis (Joni) Flaten all of Langdon, ND; grandchildren: Justin, Jeffery and Kelby; great-grandchildren: Caelin and Ansley; brothers: Gerald Flaten and John (Sherry) Flaten; sisters-in-law: Darline Knutson, Joyce McColgan, Donna Shewey, Norma Manley, Janet Letexier Hughes; and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION and PRAYER SERVICE : Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 with a 7:00 pm Prayer Service all at the Brooks Funeral Home of Langdon, ND. Visitation will also take place for one hour before the time of the services at the church on Wednesday.

SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 1:00 pm at the Emmanuel Evangelical Church of Langdon, ND.

INTERMENT Vang Cemetery, Vang, ND.

Vicky,

Your sacrifices for the caregiving and love you gave so unconditionally to your parents is a true testament to your character.  How very fortunate they were to have such an exceptional daughter.

I am so sorry for you losses.

With love,

Nancy Anderson

Dennis and Vicki,

I was real sorry to hear about your dads passing. I have many memories of your dad at the church in Vang and hunting. He had called and visited awhile back and I sure enjoyed that. I am thankful for his strong faith in Christ as his personal Savior. May the Lord strengthen you during this hard time.

Henry and Linda Mohagen

Vicky, Dennis & Famiiy

Sorry to hear of Carlton passing. Growing up as neighbors to the Flatens, we spent a lot of time with them and have a lot of fond memories.   Larry and I spoke Norwegian while Gerald and Carlton spoke English, it was comical.

Carlton will be missed but we can be assured that he is in a better place now.

Kenny Johnson

Vicki & family,

I am so sorry for your loss. The death of  loved one is such a painful time.  Only Jehovah  truly understand the depth of pain and offers comfort and hope to each of us at this most difficult time. Please read Psalm 37:29, John 11:24-27. Psalm 83:18.

Hope this thought and scriptures bring comfort to your heart as they have mine during this time of sadness.

Lee & Irene Keyes

Dennis and Joni,

So sorry to read of Carlton's passing. We had a nice visit with him shortly before we left for Arizona. We are so happy we did. Carlton always had some time to visit. Of course we will always fondly remember you and Carlton helping Tomi get her moose. I believe it was 1989.Our condolences to your family.
