Bessie F. Field

Bessie Field, 103, of Langdon, ND passed away on Friday, Apirl 29, 2011 at Cavalier County Memorial Hospital in Langdon.

Bessie F. McFarlane was born July 23, 1907 to Alex and Laura (Dunford) McFarlane in Harvey Township near Langdon, ND. She attended a rural school before graduating from Langdon High School in 1926. Bessie was the first Rainbow Worthy Advisor when the Order was chartered in 1925. After high school, Bessie went on to attend Valley City Teachers College.  In both high school and college, Bessie was a member of the women’s basketball team.

Bessie married Earl Field on December 5, 1932 in Langdon.  She and Earl lived on the farm in Harvey Township for 51 years and then moved to Langdon in the late 1960s. Bessie was a hard worker and contributed to the farm. Bessie enjoyed curling, playing cards, yard work, gardening and baking. Some say that she had the best fried chicken in Cavalier County!

Bessie was involved in Eastern Star, Stilwell Ladies Aide, West Hope Homemakers, and various other organizations. In 2007, there was a big celebration for her 100th birthday. Bessie was fortunate enough to be able to live in her own house on her own until she was 102 years old.  Last year, she became a resident of Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.

Bessie is survived by her three sons:  Lorne (Gertie) of Langdon, Tom (Beth) of Sheridan, WY, and Duane (Joanne) of Langdon; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law:  Ann McFarlane.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers: John, Robert, and Harvey; four sisters: Laura, Ada, Elsie, and Emily; and a grandson: David Field.

Funeral services for Bessie will be held on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Langdon, ND.  Visitation will take place from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Brooks Funeral Home in Langdon and for one hour before services at the church on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be sent to Maple Manor Care Center, Cavalier County Memorial Hospital, or the American Cancer Society.

Condolences:

Although seeing Bessie often when I was child at church, I really didn't get to know her until I began delivering Meals on Wheels for the Langdon Senior Center.  Bessie was one of my favorite stops because, regardless of how hectic your day was, Bessie's demeanor allowed you to "stop and smell the roses." She was such a special person and will be missed by many.  God bless her memory because she will always be in my memory.                                                                             Dennis Throndset

It was always a joy to see Bessie when I would be visiting my family in ND.  A wonderful person I'm sure will be missed by all. Condolences to the family. Becky McGovern

Our deepest sympathy in the passing of Bess.  She was a true sport that could brighten your day with her positive attitude.  What a blessing she has been to so many.  God Bless her memories.  Love TR and Judy

Lorne, Tom, Duane and your families:

Your Great Grandmother, Grandma Dunford, was the first person that I knew that lived past 100 years - I believe she was 102.  Also, she was the only person that I ever knew who was born before the start of the Civil War.  And now your Mom, with those wonderful Dunford genes, outlived Grandma Dunford by nearly two years.  What a wonderful legacy she leaves.  We know that you are filled with sorrow at her passing, but at the same time you rejoice in knowing that she no longer has to endure the agonies of old age.  One would think that she knew that it was time for her to die, knowing that your whole family was gathered to celebrate the memory of David's life.  May God's Mercy and Grace strengthen each of you in this time of your mixed emothions.  Wish we could be there with you.  Long will be the memories of an amazing lady, neighbor and friend.  Blessings in abundance to each of you.

With love and friendship,  Frank and Sandy Jennings

Bessie is dear to us and I have known her all my life.  Growing up next farm away we spent many hours together as families.  So many fun times and memories.  Loved stopping in Langdon in later years and always seeing a multitude of pictures of her kids and grand kids.  She was so proud of her boys and their families. Sampling some of her latest baking was always high on the list of things to share as well.  May she rest in peace and may you all savor the multitude of Bessie tales and memories.  Regret not being able to be there tomorrow but will be in spirit.

Love to al,l John and Joann Lawrence

I will miss you Grandma! I have nothing but the best memories of you while growing up and it's hard to believe you are gone. I am very grateful that my wife and kids got to meet you and you had a chance to get to know them a little, they will be better for it. RIP Grandma
